Bridge in tarot
A bridge joins two banks and so stands for passage, connection and the way out of a difficulty; in Roman religion the chief priest was the pontifex, the bridge-builder between gods and people. Two Waite-Smith cards show one. In the Five of Cups a stone bridge crosses the river behind the mourning figure, out of his sight, leading towards a small keep on the far side. In the Four of Wands a bridge crosses towards the castle beyond the garlanded wands, which Waite described as a bridge over a moat. Readers take a bridge as a route home, a reconciliation or a way forward that is there to be used.

Four of Wands
Four of Wands: The bridge
On the right a pale arched bridge crosses toward the castle; Waite describes it as a bridge over a moat. It is the way in, the point where a traveller arrives and is received.

Five of Cups
Five of Cups: The bridge
A pale stone bridge with arches crosses the river on the right. It offers a way across: towards home, recovery or the next stage, available whenever the figure turns to it.
