Everything on this site is either public domain, written for the site, or a traditional correspondence that we check against a published table at every build.

The card art

All 78 images are Pamela Colman Smith’s drawings for the Rider–Waite–Smith tarot, first published by William Rider & Son of London in December 1909. The scans are of an original first-printing deck (the “Roses & Lilies” printing, named for its card back), scanned by the collector Saskia Jansen and published on Wikimedia Commons. They are in the public domain: the deck was published in 1909, and Smith died in 1951, so her work is out of copyright in the United States and in countries where copyright lasts 70 years after the author’s death.

We deliberately do not use the later redrawn or recoloured editions, such as the 1971 U.S. Games printing or the 1990 “Universal Waite”, whose new colouring is under copyright. Each file is pinned by name, and at every image refresh the build re-reads its Commons record and stops unless Commons lists it as public domain, in the category PD-old-70-expired, dated 1909, by Pamela Colman Smith. The images are re-encoded on our server and served from this site; no image is loaded from Commons by your browser.

The card readings, spreads, symbol notes and history were written for this site, with the help of AI language models working from the card images and the public-domain sources below, and reviewed against each image. They are not paraphrased from any modern tarot book. Quotations marked as Waite’s come verbatim from A. E. Waite, The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (London: William Rider & Son, 1911; first issued in 1910 as The Key to the Tarot), public domain, as transcribed on Wikisource. The Celtic Cross positions follow Waite’s own description in Part III of that book.

Card meanings are not facts in the way dates are. Readers have disagreed about them since the eighteenth century. What we have tried to do is describe what is actually drawn on each 1909 card, stay close to the tradition Waite and Smith worked in, and say where readers differ.

Every build checks that each of the 78 cards has all of its parts: summary, keywords, upright, reversed, love, work, advice, a yes/no lean with its reason, reflection questions, at least four symbolism notes, history and related cards. The build stops if any is missing, if a symbol tag or related card does not exist, or if an image lacks its public-domain record.

Astrological and Hebrew-letter correspondences

The attributions on each card page are those of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, the London occult society (founded 1888) to which Waite and Smith both belonged: each trump is linked to a Hebrew letter and to an element, planet or sign, and each numbered minor card from two to ten to a decan (ten degrees of the zodiac) and its ruling planet. The titles such as “Lord of Abundance” are the small cards’ names in the Golden Dawn’s “Book T”, first printed in Aleister Crowley’s journal The Equinox in 1912; we give them as traditionally printed but have not checked them against a facsimile. These are a symbolic system, a tradition, not astronomy, and not a claim about how the planets affect anyone.

At every build the 58 attributions are compared with two published tables on English Wikipedia: “Golden Dawn correspondences of the Major Arcana” in the article Tarot card reading (which cites Decker & Dummett, A History of the Occult Tarot), and the decan tables in Thoth Tarot (Crowley kept the Golden Dawn decans for the small cards). Last check: 2026-10-26, 58 of 58 match. The check earned its place: our first draft had the rulers of the Nine and Ten of Swords swapped (Sun and Mars), and the comparison caught it before anything was published.

Court cards. The Golden Dawn gave each court card an element within its suit: Pages (their Princesses) are Earth and Queens are Water. Knights and Kings are where systems part. The Golden Dawn’s mounted “Knight” is Fire and its “Prince” in a chariot is Air, and later writers map these to Waite’s Knights and Kings in opposite ways. We show both rather than pretend the tradition is settled.

Numerology. The number notes follow the common modern reading convention, which grew out of Pythagorean number symbolism through the nineteenth-century occult revival. They are a convention, not a law.

The reading table and yes-or-no draw shuffle the 78 cards in your browser with its cryptographic random number generator (crypto.getRandomValues, Fisher–Yates shuffle). Reversals, if switched on, are a fair coin per card. The card of the day is the same for everyone on a given date: it comes from a fixed scrambling of the date (a 32-bit xorshift of the year, month and day, modulo 78), computed at the nightly build and again in your browser. Nothing you do is sent or stored.
