Venus symbol in tarot
The circle above a cross, now used as the sign for female, was the astronomers' sign for the planet Venus and the alchemists' sign for copper. On the Empress card it decorates a heart-shaped shield leaning against her seat. The Golden Dawn linked the Empress to Venus, and the card shares the goddess's associations of love, beauty, fertility and the pleasures of the senses. In readings the Venus sign points to love, creativity and nurture, and to the generous abundance that the Empress embodies.
