The Career Path Spread spread
This spread is for questions about work and vocation: whether to stay or go, how to grow in a role, or what to make of a career that has stopped feeling like your own. Five cards climb like steps, from where you stand now to the way forward, with your strengths, your obstacles and what you still need to develop in between. It is meant to clarify your own thinking, not to choose a job for you.
It is a modern, general-purpose layout rather than a historical one. The order of the cards follows a simple coaching logic: take stock honestly, recognise what you already have, name what is in the way, decide what to work on, then look ahead.
The positions
- 1
Where you stand
Your working life as it is now: your position, your mood about it and the conditions around you.
- 2
Your strengths
What you bring: a skill, quality or resource you can rely on, perhaps one you undervalue.
- 3
What holds you back
The obstacle in your way: a circumstance, a habit or a belief about yourself that limits your progress.
- 4
What to develop
A skill, attitude or source of support worth building, which would help you move past the obstacle.
- 5
The way forward
The direction that opens if you work with what the other cards show: a path to explore, not a guaranteed destination.
How to lay and read it
Lay the five cards from the lower left, each one a step higher and further to the right. Read the first card as an honest picture of your working life now. Read the second and third as a pair, since a strength and a block are often two sides of the same trait. The fourth card is something to develop: a skill, an attitude or a kind of support. The fifth shows the direction that opens if you work with what the others have shown. Pentacles here often speak to security and skill, Wands to ambition and drive, Cups to how the work feels, and Swords to decisions and conflict.
Tips
- Read cards 2 and 3 together: confidence can become impatience, care can become overwork.
- A court card in position 4 may describe a person worth learning from as much as a quality to develop.
- This spread looks at attitudes and choices. Financial or contractual decisions deserve proper advice.
