The Situation, Action, Outcome spread
This three-card spread is built for practical questions where you already know something needs doing but are not sure what. The first card describes the situation as it is, the second suggests an approach to it, and the third shows where that approach tends to lead. It moves the reading away from passively waiting to see what happens and towards a decision you can actually make.
It is one of many working variations on the three-card row and has no particular author or history. Its value is in the framing: by naming the middle card as an action, it makes the reader ask what each card would look like as something done rather than something felt.
The positions
- 1
The situation
The situation as it actually stands, including the forces and feelings already at work in it.
- 2
The action
An approach worth considering: the quality or step this card suggests bringing to the situation.
- 3
The outcome
Where that action tends to lead. Read it as a likely direction, and as a check on whether the action fits what you want.
How to lay and read it
Lay three cards left to right. Read the first as an honest description of the situation, including the parts you would rather not see. Read the second as advice: imagine the figure on the card, or the quality it carries, as a way of acting. Then read the third as the likely result of acting that way. If the outcome card sits badly with you, that is useful too: it may show that the suggested action needs adjusting, or that the situation card needs a second look.
Tips
- Phrase the action card as a verb: the Hermit might be 'step back and think', the Knight of Wands 'move now'.
- A court card in the action position can describe a person whose help or example is worth seeking.
- If the outcome card is difficult, draw one more card as a clarifier for what might change it.
