The Three-Card Spread (Past, Present, Future) spread
Three cards in a row is the first spread most readers learn and one many keep using for years. Read as past, present and future, it turns a question into a short story: what led here, what is happening now, and where things are tending. Three is enough to show movement and contrast without the weight of a large layout, which makes it good for daily practice, for quick check-ins and for learning how cards speak to their neighbours.
The layout has no single origin. Small spreads of three cards appear in many card-reading traditions and in fortune-telling manuals with ordinary playing cards, and the past-present-future reading is one of several ways to use them. The row adapts easily: the same three places can become situation, obstacle, advice, or you, the other person, the relationship.
The positions
- 1
The past
What has led to the present situation: earlier events, choices or attitudes whose effects are still felt.
- 2
The present
Where things stand now, and the energy or attitude most active in the situation at this moment.
- 3
The future
The direction things are moving if the present course holds: a tendency you can still work with, not a fixed result.
How to lay and read it
Shuffle, draw three cards and lay them left to right. Look at all three before you read any of them on its own: notice whether the suits or colours change, whether a court card or a Major Arcana card stands out, and whether the figures seem to face towards or away from each other. Then read left to right as a sequence. The future card is best read as the direction things are moving, which you can still influence, not as a verdict.
Tips
- Read the middle card first: the present is the only place where you can act.
- If the future card troubles you, look back at the present card for what could shift the direction.
- Try the same three positions with other labels (mind, body, spirit; situation, action, outcome) once the basic row feels natural.
