The Yes or No spread
Sometimes a question really is yes or no, and it can help to put it to a card. In this spread you draw one card and read whether its general tone leans towards yes, towards no, or towards a maybe that depends on something else. Every card page on this site gives a yes, no or maybe lean, based on the card's traditional character: bright, active cards like the Sun or the Ace of Wands lean yes, cards of loss or blockage like the Tower or the Ten of Swords lean no, and many cards sit in between.
We want to be honest about what this is. A card cannot know whether you will get the job or whether someone will call. What a yes or no draw can do is show you something about the question: what the situation feels like, what is standing in the way, or what you already suspect. Folk practice has many yes or no methods, such as reading upright as yes and reversed as no, and none of them has any special authority. The reason given with the answer is the useful part, so read it before you read the word.

The answer
The card's lean towards yes, no or maybe, and the reason behind it. Read the reason as carefully as the answer.
How to lay and read it
Ask a clear, single question that concerns you and your own choices. Shuffle, draw one card and read its lean. Then read why it leans that way, and ask yourself how you felt when you saw the answer. Relief or disappointment at a yes or no is often the clearest signal in the whole reading: it tells you what you were hoping for. If the card says maybe, take it at its word: the situation probably depends on something not yet decided, possibly by you.
Tips
- Ask about your own actions ('Is this a good time for me to ask for the role?') rather than other people's decisions.
- Notice your reaction to the answer before you think about the card: it often settles the question.
- Do not keep drawing until you get the answer you want; if you want to go further, use a three-card spread instead.
- This spread is not for health, legal, money or safety decisions. Those deserve proper advice.
Questions that suit this spread
- Am I ready to start this project now?
- Is it worth raising this issue with my friend?
- Does this plan still fit what I want?
A note on its history
Yes or no readings belong to folk cartomancy rather than to any written tradition. Waite's Pictorial Key does not give yes or no meanings for the cards. The leans used on this site follow the general character of each card as it is commonly read today.
