The New Moon Intentions spread

Many people like to mark the new moon, the point in the monthly cycle when the moon is dark, as a time for beginnings. This spread uses that moment for a short ritual of intention-setting: taking stock, letting something go, choosing what to begin, and finding a first practical step. Five cards are laid in a shallow arc, like the thin crescent that follows the new moon.

Moon-phase spreads are a modern practice. Linking new beginnings to the new moon is an old and widespread idea, but tarot spreads built around the lunar cycle became popular only in recent decades, alongside the wider interest in ritual and journaling. Nothing about the reading depends on the actual date: the new moon is simply a useful, recurring reminder to stop and choose a direction.

The positions

  1. 1

    Where you are

Your starting point this cycle: your mood, circumstances and what is on your mind.

  2. 2

    What to release

Something to let go of: a habit, worry, expectation or commitment that no longer serves you.

  3. 3

    What to begin

The intention worth planting now: something to start, practise or welcome in.

  4. 4

    What supports it

A resource, quality or person that can help the intention take root.

  5. 5

    The first step

A concrete action you can take soon to set the intention in motion.

How to lay and read it

On or near the new moon, take a few quiet minutes. Shuffle and lay five cards in an arc from left to right. Read the first card as where you are now. The second is something to release, and the third something to begin; read them as a pair, since letting go often makes room. The fourth shows what will support your intention, and the fifth a first step. Write the intention down in one sentence, and look at the cards again at the full moon, two weeks later, to see how it is going.
