The Relationship Spread spread
This spread looks at a relationship between two people: a partner, a friend, a parent, a colleague. It gives each person their own cards, sets the connection between them in the middle, and then asks what each needs, what is difficult, and what is worth tending. Because both people have a place on the table, it encourages you to see the other person as someone with their own side of the story rather than as a problem to be solved.
Layouts with a card for each person and a card for the bond between them are common to many readers and have no single source; this is a straightforward version of that idea. One caution matters more than any position: the cards for the other person describe how they appear from where you stand. They are a prompt to imagine their side, not a window into someone else's mind.
The positions
- 1
You
How you are showing up in this relationship: your attitude, mood and part in it as things stand.
- 2
The connection
What joins the two of you: the shared ground, the bond or the pattern that defines the relationship now.
- 3
The other person
How the other person appears from your side: their likely attitude or situation. A prompt to imagine their view, not a reading of their mind.
- 4
What you need
What you need from the relationship, which may not be what you have been asking for.
- 5
The challenge
What strains the connection: a difference, an old pattern, or something unspoken between you.
- 6
What they need
What the other person may need from the relationship, as best you can see it. Worth checking with them.
- 7
What to nurture
What is worth tending in this relationship: a quality or step that could help it grow, whatever form it takes.
How to lay and read it
Lay the top row first: you on the left, the connection in the middle, the other person on the right. Lay the second row beneath it in the same order: what you need, the challenge, what they need. Put the last card at the bottom in the centre. Read the columns as well as the rows: the left column is your side, the right column theirs, and the middle column runs from what joins you, through what strains it, to what could help.
Tips
- Read the two outer columns against each other: matching suits often show shared ground, clashing ones different priorities.
- Treat the cards for the other person as questions to ask them, not answers about them.
- If both 'needs' cards are hard to meet at once, the challenge card in the middle usually shows why.
