The Mind, Body, Spirit spread
This is a check-in rather than a question. Three cards look at three sides of a person: the mind, meaning thoughts, worries and ways of seeing; the body, meaning physical life, energy, habits and surroundings; and the spirit, meaning whatever gives your life a sense of meaning, whether you would call that faith, purpose, creativity or simply what keeps you going. Seeing the three side by side often shows where one area is pulling against another.
The spread is a modern one with no clear origin, shaped by the broader wellbeing language of recent decades. It works best as a reflective exercise. The body card in particular describes your relationship with rest, effort and your surroundings, not your health: it has nothing to say about illness, and nothing on this site is a substitute for a doctor.
The positions
- 1
Mind
Your thoughts and mental state: what is occupying you, how you are seeing things, and the stories you are telling yourself.
- 2
Body
Your physical life and surroundings: energy, rest, habits and the practical conditions you are living in.
- 3
Spirit
What gives your life meaning at the moment, or what that part of you is asking for.
How to lay and read it
Lay the mind and body cards side by side and the spirit card above them, or simply in a row. Read each on its own first, then look at the three together. Are they in the same suit, or all different? Is one card much heavier or brighter than the others? The most useful insight usually comes from the relationship between the cards: a busy, anxious mind card next to a restful body card, for example, can suggest that the worry is not coming from where you thought.
Tips
- Use it at the start of a week or after a demanding stretch, when you want to take stock rather than solve a problem.
- Read the body card as practical: sleep, movement, food, space, routine, not as a comment on your health.
- Keep the three cards in a journal and compare them with the next check-in.
Questions that suit this spread
- Where am I out of balance at the moment?
- What does each part of me need this week?
- What is quietly draining me, and what is quietly sustaining me?
