The Shadow Self Spread spread

This spread is for self-reflection of a harder kind: looking at the parts of yourself you would prefer not to see. It begins with the face you show the world, then turns to what sits behind it, where that hidden part slips out, what it is trying to protect, and how you might live with it more openly. It is not about finding something wrong with you. Often the hidden part turns out to be a need, a hurt or a strength that was never given room.

The word "shadow" comes from the psychologist C. G. Jung, who used it for the parts of the personality a person does not recognise as their own. Using tarot cards for this sort of inner work, often called shadow work, is a recent practice, popular in the last couple of decades, and this layout is a simple general version of it rather than a historical spread. It suits a quiet moment and a journal. If it stirs up something heavy, it is worth talking to someone you trust, and a reading is no substitute for therapy.

The positions

  1. 1

    The face you show

The self you present to others, and perhaps to yourself: the role or image you lead with.

  2. 2

    What you keep hidden

A part of you held out of sight: a feeling, need or trait you find hard to own.

  3. 3

    Where it surfaces

Where the hidden part slips out: in reactions, patterns, irritation with others or the things you avoid.

  4. 4

    What it protects

Why it is hidden: the hurt, fear or need it has been guarding, often since long ago.

  5. 5

    Making peace

A way to acknowledge this part of you and give it a better place in your life.

How to lay and read it

Lay card 1 in the centre, card 2 below it, card 3 to the left, card 4 to the right and card 5 above. Read the centre card as the self you present, then card 2 beneath it as what that presentation keeps out of sight. Cards 3 and 4 sit on either side of the hidden card's story: where it shows itself, and why it is there. Card 5, at the top, offers a way to bring it into the light. Go slowly, and write down your first reaction to each card before you read its meaning.
